— ABSTRACT —

Unions have a substantial impact on the compensation and work lives of both unionized and non-unionized workers. In most countries, the unionization of public servants is a very common right protected by their constitutions. On the other hand, there is a category of public servants that are restricted from unionization in some countries. Turkey is one of these countries, in which a significant portion of the public servants is banned from establishing unions. According to the law, constabulary members are on the exclusion list of organizing unions or affiliated to unions. Unionization attempts have never ended in Turkish Police, and a few courageous police officers have not stopped their efforts to establish a police union since 2012.

In this regard, this paper aims to discuss and find out the significant role of unions in democracies and describes the unionization struggle of the police in Turkey. Observation of the author of the Turkish National Police Organization and the inference of domestic law on unionization have been stressed in the paper.
